Iraqi refugees are helpless PDF Print E-mail

The US invaded Iraq with the aim of controlling its resources, mainly oil and to avenge President Bush Jr's father against Saddam Hussein. What they forgot was this war would spark violence and send millions of Iraqis into refugee camps across the world. Now these Iraqi citizens are at the merci of unscrupulous smugglers.

There is great desperation among Iraqi refugees and this has caused concern in Europe. Not that the Europeans are worried about the lives of these people but they are worried that illegal migration to the EU might endanger the balance in their closely guarded societies. Europe is not willing to - after supporting the US in the illegal war on Iraq - to share the loads and to take in the refugees.

The Iraqi refugees, many having left with their treasures, are prone to fall victims to the activities of smugglers who exploit them.

In June this year the agency Europol (European Police) carried out one of the biggest coordinated sweeps against smuggler networks across Europe. They arrested 75 people in nine European countries. The sweep was code-named ‘Operation Baghdad,’ and many of the migrants were Iraqis.

Europol says asylum applications filed in European countries are an indirect indicator of the impact of ilegal migration from Iraq and that many of the applicants for asylum are doing so thanks to the activities in illegal smuggling of humans across European borders.

More than 2.5 million Iraqis have fled their country over the past five years tough lesser are now feeling Iraq. The tension between the ethnic groups in Iraq has toned down recently. Many of these refugees are now living in Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and some are even going to Albania. There are very few in the US and almost none in Asia.

In the Arab nations, the  Iraqi refugees are not always welcomed. One reason is they are very enterprising and they compete with the locals in Souks and their inteligence seem to be higher than other Arabs due to the type of education they were given under the Saddam Husein regime.

A tiny portion of these Iraqi refugees can resettle legally in Europe or the United States. Sweden has given shelter to about 40,000 Iraqis since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq _ far more than any other Western country. And after a slow start, US authorities said last month that they had taken in around 5,800 Iraqis so far this fiscal year, wrote AP.

But others have little hope. Even those who have gained legal status in Syria, Jordan or Turkey are usually not allowed to work, meaning they must find jobs under the table or live off rapidly dwindling funds brought from Iraq said the AP reporter.

China fails in dialogue with Muslims, expect rise in attacks
In its rush to provide an incident free Olympics, the Chinese authorities have done the obvious – bar locals from access to the Olympic villages and to stadiums. These places are only accessible if tickets are showed and passes are checked. There appears to be little scope for rebel groups to attack the Olympic stadiums but the authorities are not willing to let anything happen.

An Israeli official confirmed to Reuters that Tel Aviv had asked for criteria-based changes in NSG rules, but denied that it had sought a waiver. Australia should stop the farce in anti-terror trial

The Australian government and justice system should stop the farce in the trial of Muslim Journalist Belal Saadallah Khazaal of the New South Wales in Australia. It has been proven that the police did not do its investigation properly before sending the accusation papers against Belal to trial. This has not only damaged the image of the Australian Muslim but also that of Australia as a nation that is too pushy to prove that Muslims are terror suspects.

I swear they robbed me of my rights!

It is the season of swearing with the American song ‘I swear’ turning the atmosphere into a happy swearing mood! While Anwar Ibrahim is the only one who says ‘I won’t swear’, the rest of the cohorts are swearing over the Muslim holy book or unofficially and even to clear their hands of scandals.

Image US adopts pre-emptive political meddling
The US insisted that Myanmar should accept its aids – which surely come with strings attached – but when the Myanmar regime refused to recant the US pressed the Asean defense Ministers during a meeting in Singapore in May this year. It is only when this failed that the US decided to give up on the Myanmar issue. Washington tried to take advantage of the desperate situation in the country which it considers as an enemy state.
