The answer is as quick as that. The coronation of Benazir’s husband Asif Ali Zardari as President of Pakistan! This is the reason why the US nodded in approval for the removal of Musharaf and accepted his resignation without much ado.
Parvez Musharaf rose as a new face in Pakistan’s already depleted political scene and brought a breath of fresh air with his dog in the picture but ended as the bloodiest President since Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and will be cursed for his role in the Red Masjid (Lal Masjid) massacre. The US is definitely content with the resignation of Musharaf as President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, a country where Washington will now have to lose or win its lame war on terror. Why is the US content? The fact that Musharaf was slow at executing Washington’s orders to ‘eliminate’ Islamic militancy in his country became a turning point in the otherwise ‘brotherly’ relationship between Pakistan and the US. This resistance by Musharaf, also known as Busharaf by many, was simply due to the knots that tied Musharaf to the presidency. He came to power in 1999 after a bloodless coup, overthrowing a thriving but corrupt democratic government headed by Nawaz Sharif. He quickly became the darling of the Army and of some of the Islamic groups – despite showing off his dogs – and being known for his drinking habits. He was well received by a majority of the Pakistani people who saw Sharif as the embodiment of a corrupt regime that did not move things fast enough for the people. Musharaf is an ego centric politician who knows that he carries weight in his country and in America. This lead to the greed and the thirst to clinch to power that turned Musharaf into a personality suffering from narcissism. He thought that Pakistan will not survive without him and professed his beliefs that ‘Pakistan is Me’ and ‘I am Pakistan’ in reminiscence of the old French saying ‘L’etat C’est Moi’. Now that he has left, Pakistan is still standing but it is no better than it was before Musharaf took power illegally in 1999. It has indeed deteriorated since it became the pawn in Washington’s deadly game of hunting down Muslim Militants and Mujahideen fighters who are politically and fundamentally anti-American. The Washington elite had earlier this year sent in Benazir Bhutto, the daughter of a beloved but former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who ended up hanged for corruption and for other wrong doings in the 1970’s. Benazir was to replace Musharaf at the presidency in Pakistan and this would have helped the cause of the US in the country and in the region in the midst of the rising crisis in Afghanistan. The Americans had understood that they had miscalculated the power of the Talibans and had entered Iraq only to their detriment and in response to their own ‘empirical’ egoism. Iraq has damaged the US enough but it is Afghanistan that was the real game player that the US should have handled with care and more military actions than Iraq. Opening a new war zone in Iraq was more to the advantage of Iran and Mujahideen fighters who were waiting for an opportunity to see relief in Afghanistan. Afghanistan was an easy, far too easy battle for the US in 2001. It was helped largely by groups that opposed the Taliban composed mostly of the little army of the Northern Alliance reinforced by the military might of drug dealers and war lords from both Afghan and Tajik origins. The amalgam of anti-Taliban forces helped the US pierce through the Taliban ranks and conquer Afghanistan after a rather one sided battle. The ease of the victory over the Taliban reinforced the egoism of the Americans and the British governments and made believe Iraq would be a similar success story. The apparent clam that followed the American success in Afghanistan with the Taliban being all but beaten and gone or diminished into a mini-force, the Americans brought in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) forces to have a training ground for its soldiers. It then attacked Iraq with Musharaf looking from the distance, approving of the Iraqi incursions by the Americans but happy that Afghanistan was not a pressure cooker ready to explode under his wide opened eyes. It was too rosy for Musharaf who had discounted his own Intelligentsia which had other plans than seeing Afghanistan fall into slumber and become another ‘occupied’ Muslim territory. The ISI was supporting the Taliban to regroup, feeding it intelligentsia on when to attack and how to carry out the attacks in Afghanistan. The ISI is indeed infiltrated by western intelligentsia but the western spies were being fed with the wrong information in order to keep the US away from Afghanistan and from Pakistan’s politics. The ISI succeeded largely and is today blamed for the resurgence of the Taliban and what the west calls Islamic extremists and militancy in Pakistan. ![]() Musharaf another pawn in US wars The Americans were largely successful in 2001 due to the Pakistani silence on the American decision to attack Afghanistan. The ISI knew that the Americans would not be able to control the country fully and that it would have a free hand in molding the future of Afghanistan. The other success rate of the US in the 2001 war was its association with a ramshackle group of warriors and fighters. Dealing with drugs dealers, growers and war lords amid other criminals to win a war against the Taliban had taught the US something: That you cannot trust the Mafia. Today the mafia is rallying some of its forces to re-join a resurging Taliban force and attack US and Nato forces in Afghanistan. The US generals however failed to understand that the mafia is on your side only when you are on their side. The Afghanistan mafia was very reliable to the Americans in carrying out ‘CIA’ ops and helping CIA spies enter Afghanistan before and during the war in 2001. The relationship between the Afghan drug and trafficking mafia with the Americans turned sour and deadly after the Americans started to target the opium dealers and growers. This started to cut off the profits and ruin the business of the war lords and of the gangsters who were running a quarter of the country while the Taliban was slowly creeping into the control of half of Afghanistan. Musharaf was bemused by the Taliban situation, hoping that the country would fall into Pakistan’s lap and would become the ultimate Pakistani prize once it become a left-over of the US war on terrorism. The intel services of Pakistan was active in helping the Taliban in Pakistan and in Afghanistan in their rise. The Taliban would never have done its conquest of large parts of Afghanistan had the US been there firmly to prevent them from reappearing. Yet the ISI was clever enough to let the Americans and the CIA indeed believe that it was in absolute control of the situation in Pakistan and that the Taliban was at a lost, broken down for good. However, the aim of the ISI was to reduce the pressure that a strong Afghanistan government would have created against the Taliban. This would have resulted in the Taliban spilling into vast areas of Pakistan, uncontrolled, and would have destabilized Pakistan. Eventually, the Taliban grew smarter and not only recaptured large areas of its own territory left in 2001 in Afghanistan but also affirming its authority in the Pakistani North West Frontier Territory where most of its support came from well before its capture of Afghanistan after the Soviet defeat. Today the Taliban is effectively controlling – thanks to the ISI – a large section of the Northern Frontier of Pakistan and the south-eastern regions of Afghanistan. The US wanted to bring the war to the Afghans in these regions but Musharaf was very reluctant for two reasons. The backlash of the Lal Masjid massacre had made him trapped into his own shoes in his presidential palace and the possibility of an impeachment in the event he allows US troops on Pakistani land. The impeachment efforts came after the relentless killing of civilians – from cruise missiles and stealth bombers – of the US army and this tarnished Musharaf’s image even further among the newly formed coalition government in the Parliament. Incidentally it is the party of bereaved Benazir that initiated the move to impeach Musharaf and this was done with the complacency of the Bush regime in Washington. The aim of removing Musharaf is primarily to give the US a larger control of the military in the country and to allow its troops to enter the country and deal with insurgents and the Taliban in the North West Provinces and Waziristan. It is also part of the ongoing efforts by Washington to overrun the Taliban in Afghanistan. The question is how will the US succeed with Musharaf out of the picture? The answer is as quick as that. The coronation of Benazir’s husband Mirza as President of Pakistan! This is the reason why the US nodded in approval for the removal of Musharaf and accepted his resignation without much ado. And this coronation of a new president will be the arch bearer for the US in its flinching war against Islamic mujahideen who are today the major cause of concern for the Americans. The Mujahideen were responsible, largely enough , for the 30,000 wounded US soldiers in Iraq and the 5000 US deaths in the home country of Saddam Hussein. The Mujahideen are also responsible for at least 1000 American deaths and numerous more wounded in Afghanistan. They have to be stopped at all cost by Washington – this is the thinking that we can get from the White House. If Washington fails to deal a severe blow to the Mujahideen and the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Republican party will lose everything in the upcoming crucial Senatorial, Gubernatorial and Presidential elections in the US in November 2008. Musharaf now not important anymore to be used as a scapegoat for the US to advance its cause against islam, he is chunked away and his high and mighty image is destroyed by a rogue Parliament that would have impeached and possibly jailed him if he did not resign willingly. This is the end of an era, the end of Musharaf. | |

4. The author is lying, or is just too ignorant, in his assertion that Musharraf came to power "illegally" in 1999. In fact, the supreme court judges of Pakistan LEGITIMISED the military take-over and said it did not contradict the Pakistani constitution. The PCO Judge Iftikhar Chaudhry legitimised it. In fact, Judges whom the PPP and PML-N support SIGNED the verdict APPROVING the 1999 army take-over!
5. It is simply wrong to assert that Pakistan's standing is "no better" now than it was in 1999. Things have changed a lot in Pakistan in this period. Our economy has more than doubled under Musharraf. There was under Musharraf unprecedented media freedom in Pakistan. At the moment Pakistan's economy is in crises due to the incompetency of the new regime whose members previously looted Pakistan, but it is WAY STRONGER than the bankrupt economy Nawaz Sharif left in 1999. That is to say, if the new regime decides to take the economy seriously, then it can sort out the outstanding problems. 6. Which "Muslim Militants" and "Mujahideen fighters" is the author talking about? Certainly he has the terrorists in mind who have been conducting suicide bombings throughout Pakistan and who have been attacking the military. He indirectly supports these people by addressing them as "mujahideen". It is in Pakistan's national interest to fight and exterminate these terrorists. We do not want Taliban's barbaric cruel and unIslamic rule over Pakistan. 7. The writer simply makes assertions and presents questionable/debatable assumptions as if they are "objective facts" without bothering to offer any piece of evidence. What is the evidence that the ISI was allegedly "assisting" the Taliban regroup and to carry out attacks in Afghanistan? The authors certainly believes this occurred, but bothers not to share a shred of evidence with us. Likewise, where is the evidence that the ISI allegedly fed the US with disinformation in order to assist the Taliban? Here is the problem, which exposes widely the inconsistency of the author: the author is blindly accepting American allegations against the ISI. It is the American media and some officials who have been making such allegations against the ISI. Our author merely takes their word for granted and presumes everything they allege to be gospel truth. For him there can be no reason to doubt these allegations. Yet he will be inclined to be dismissive and reject from the outset the various claims heaped towards, say, the Taliban, coming from the same sources! 8. It is simply false to say that the Taliban "control" today a "large section" of the NWFP province. In fact in over 95% of the province there is no fighting and things are under the control of Pakistan. Only in some areas there is tension. Thus, the author exagerrates. 9. The name of Benazir's husband is not "Mirza"! It is ASIF ALI ZARDARI. In the end, the author presents a confused and self-contradictory scenario. On the one hand Musharraf is insisted to be an an American guy wilfully following all her orders, but the Americans wanted to remove him because they wanted involvement and say in the affairs of Pakistan and the Pak. Military which Musharraf, of course, was not allowing! It can't be both ways! Instead, Musharraf was a realistic and intelligent leader in his dealings with the Americans. Far from being their servant, he dismissed a number of key American demands. He never handed over AQK to the Americans, continued to strengthen Pakistan's nuclear programme, did not assist the Americans on Iraq, Iran, pursued the Iran-Pakistan-India/China pipeline project despite strong American protests, did not allow American soldiers within Pakistan, solidified relations with China and on and on. At the same time, of course, he knew that angels would not come from the heavens to fight the Americans had Pakistan dismissed all American demands and gone to war with them. Therefore, he maintained a fine balance with America and moved along with intelligence. He did not accept all their demands, but some pressures needed to be accepted for the sake of Pakistan. you describe the facts beautifully. Musharaf is a notorious person of the world, especially in pakistan. He is a terrorist in actual. He handed over alot of muslims to America, and sold a lady also. His should face media trial. if you go pakistan and take votes from people you will come to know people want to kill him. He is a criminal.
in Lal Masjid, he kills thousands of children, women, girls and innocent people. my question is from his supporters that if there was any terrorist in lal masjid then why did n't he caught him only? bombing on all, is not a solution. it proves musharaf's cruelty. there were alot of children who has no house after the earthquake where they could go? its very easy to say that they were terrorist and bombing on them just for the show of power and get reward (2 used helicopters) from US but impossible to proof them terrorist. the leader of lal masjid, Mulana Abdul Aziz (may God blesse him) had facing 37 cases in which 36 are false and court has remove them only 1 is remaining. By the grace of God he will be free from it also. it proves its all a story created by cruel people which were with busharaf. my point regarding lal masjid is that if there were terrorist then they should bring in court... who is musharaf to show his power to kill thousands of innocent?... i tell you one thing the administration of lal masjid never burnt cd shop. the owners of cd's shop burnt cd's theirselves, however, Molanas just advise (vaaz) them.if its wrong show me any case regarding. in this case owner is allowed to go in court but there is no case in the court, it just a propoganda. 2. Imam Kaaba has never declared Ghazi brothers terrorist, He just said that suicide bombers will not go in paradise and they are not muslims and this announcement was after the lal masjid attacks. He never talked about Ghazi brothers. 3. its the end of cruelty and really shameful in islamic country that a prositute (anty shamim) is protecting by arm force but there is no rule and regulations for the innocents, for the masjid's regard. is this not shameful for all muslims? Army can not fight with indian army or some other force the 3rd class musharaf's supporter just can attack on mosques and madaris. the supporters of prositutes in actualy the generation of prositutes not muslims. 4. where is law in musharaf's era? where is chief justice? what he has done? and what musharaf has proved against lawyers and judges? 5. where are missing people? 6. read the book "in the line of fire" where he corrupt confessed his crimes himself. wait coming again written by asma, September 03, 2008
7. Kargul war
8. he is the responsible for suicide attacks. 9. he created terrorist and supported them. (altaf hussain) 10. in his time period people started hate with army, and to be very honest, army also abuses him... there are alot of things happening in his time but these are also enough to proof him corrupt, cruel and notorious person. he deserves media trial and hang to be till death with his supporters. written by asma, September 04, 2008
its fact that talibs's control over 90% of the province of NWFP. they are killing Pak Army's whole unit time to time. and in last Ramadan i still remember i have read the Musharaf's words in a newspaper which were " Pakistan Army should make there Morhas first and then they should attack" . these words revealed by Musharaf in last Ramadan when talibs returned the dead bodies of soldiers and those were 150. and this is 100 & 10 % true. even an army person can not deny it.
Musharaf Govt is flop Govt at all. some people ( countable on tips) take who favoring him just coz they are in his team and with him to eat American's pieces. Election 2008 proves that his own people wanted to get rid of him. written by asma, September 05, 2008
He wrote 'Islam does not preach you be stupid, put your brains aside, and start fighting everyone immensely powerful than you".
i agree with you, then why Musharaf's Govt put their branin in aide and to be a stupid, start bombing on Mosques, Madaras. even on talibs who are more powerful than all? plz answer truely... that is not answer that you have killed this and that terrorist, you people infact kills innocent citizens not terrorist (according to you) hide in hills but when they target you, you put your hands up and throw your weapons. but in your case your family never effected coz they are far from war's area. thats why the number of terrorist was wrong (you can not kill them easily, infact when they kill you, you become frustrated and start bombing on people who are mostly women, kids) and number of soldiers are always correct. i am waiting your answer why you wise Musharaf's supporters gave him a suggestion like that in which you have made grave yard of your persons? written by musharrafsupporters, September 08, 2008
Dear Asma,
I read all your messages and well, I do not know if to laugh at you or feel sorry for your shallow thoughts. There is no point "debating" an ignoramus such as yourself who cannot manage to type a single sentence coherently and who does not know the basics of arguing in a reasoned manner. It will be pointless giving you a point by point rebuttal as nothing will penetrate your head given your enormously ignorant rantings. When you debate a stupid person, the stupid person always wins. So I congratulate you on your "victory." As for your vicious abuse, slander and vulgar comments, not to mention sheer lies, that you directed upon me on the holocaust thread, I will offer a detailed reply to all of you in a website and then invite you to offer your defenses and counter responses in the comments section. So be patient for your invitation. written by asma, September 09, 2008
Dear Musharafsupporter,
instead of answering me or debate on my comments you called me stupid and congratulate on my victory because i m a stupid lady? Right. Ok then why are you giving me another invitation? do you want my victory again? or wana congratulate me once more? Hahaha. written by musharrafsupporters, September 09, 2008
Look, you can't even write one sentence coherently, let alone logically. Let me give you some examples.
You wrote: "then why Musharaf's Govt put their branin in aide and to be a stupid, start bombing on Mosques, Madaras. even on talibs who are more powerful than all?" The entire sentence has been constructed incoherently and anyone familiar with basic English would be quite unlikely to make sense of your "reasoning" above. In fact, there is no reasoning and logic in the above. You've merely attached a set of words together without giving it any thought. I really do not know how to reply to this. You wrote: "that is not answer that you have killed this and that terrorist, you people infact kills innocent citizens not terrorist (according to you) hide in hills but when they target you..." Once again we have complete incoherent ranting, lacking any type of structure. You cannot "debate" with incoherence. Another one of your gem: "read the book "in the line of fire" where he corrupt confessed his crimes himself." See what I mean? You have the remarkable ability of typing confused sentences every other line...if your writing is so poor, sub-standard even for school level, then I can just wonder what a poor reader you are. It is unlikely that you have the acumen to adequately read "In the Line of Fire" yourself. Perhaps you attempted to do so and just didn't understand it in light of your visibly poor English. Besides total incoherence and lack of reasoning, you also have the amazing knack of uttering totally false statements every second-third line. A few examples: You wrote: "in Lal Masjid, he kills thousands of children, women, girls and innocent people." "Thousands" died in lal-Masjid?! Blatant disinformation and lie. You said: "Imam Kaaba has never declared Ghazi brothers terrorist, He just said that suicide bombers will not go in paradise and they are not muslims and this announcement was after the lal masjid attacks. He never talked about Ghazi brothers." I did not say that Imam Kaaba (Abdul Rehman Al-Sudais - I've met him) used exactly the word "terrorist", but he outright condemned the terrorist Ghazi brothers and their teachings numerous times. Here is a short report on Imam Kaaba: http://www.ipcs.org/Jun_07_pakistan.pdf Here he CLEARLY condemns the brothers. To quote: "Talking to newsmen at the Punjab House in Islamabad, In the language of an idiot, the Imam is saying that vigilantism (do you even know what this means?), something the Ghazi gang was practicing, is un-Islamic. In Islamic law, or jurisprudence, there are strict teachings against vigilantism and rebelling against the head of state. Compare this with your assertion that he "never" talked about the terrorist Ghazi brothers! This is just another example of outright disinformation. These are just a few examples I have pointed out above. There are dozens and dozens and dozens of similar misleading and ignorant comments throughout your nonsensical tirades. I really do not have the time to go through your incoherent ramblings line by line. It's not worth it. I grant you have "won" the debate for the aforementioned reasons. I just feel sorry for you because the education/schooling system in Pakistan has clearly let you down and, no doubt, so many other young people. The schooling/education system which produced you is so poor, which is no fault of yours, that you do not even have the ability to express your thoughts in a sustained and reasoned manner, with the ability of getting facts straight. I hope that for your sake and for the sake of so many other lost young Pakistanis, the new regime takes immediate vital actions to improve our education system. written by Sajjad, September 09, 2008

Islamic courts have been cleared to deal with family and divorce disputes.
Another horrible story of American inhumanity
We publish this opinion article from the Monday Morning newspaper published in Beirut, Lebanon. Article is written by Gwynne Dyer.
Very few people in Jakarta commented on the 'rising' sentiments towards the bombers but deep inside many think the bombers – especially Imam Samudra – went to the extent of bombing Bali due to their rigid beliefs regarding 'Maksyat' or illicit life styles.
I would have to write an entire article to refute Cordoba's article in detail. Perhaps I might do this in the future. For now, however, I would like to offer a brief reply to some of this claims.
1. There was no "massacre" in the Lal Masjid. After months and months of negotiations, the army had no choice but to take action against a large group of heavily armed terrorists and extremists. These terrorists had harrassed the people of Islamabad, they were openly threatening to launch a wave of suicide bombings, they had kidnapped and even murdered police officers. Moreover, they went all out vigilante and "arrested" individuals who were then "charged" with various offences and they burnt cd and video shops in Islamabad. The Imam of the Kaaba declared that these terrorists were violating Islamic law since vigilantism has no place in Islam and Islamic law requires due process. Almost all scholars condemned these terrorists led by the Ghazi brothers. But they did not listen. The Ghazi terrorists then put on the table ridiculously unrealistic demands on the table before willing to give up their arms and cease terrorism. For example, they demanded the implementation of their unique version of Islamic law throughout the land. Unless and untill this was done, their reign of terror would continue.
During these months and months of negotiations, the media blamed Musharraf for being so soft towards these hooligans and demanded strict/harsh action. Finally, when the military action was taken, the same media turned against Musharraf! So then, do it and you're damned and don't do it and you're damned!
Be that as it may, the Pakistan military - the real and only mujahideen in Pakistan - did the right thing by freeing a masjid from the clutches of ignorant terrorists and extremists. Perhaps the only mistake they made was in not killing all the captured terrorists, who subsequently carried out multiple suicide bombings upon civillians throughout Pakistan.
2. Musharraf did not "quickly" became a "darling" of the army after the 1999 coup. He was the army chief and was ALWAYS well loved and respected by the army. He still IS.
3. Musharraf is "known" for his "drinking habits"? Where is the proof? But let us suppose that he is. Are we to believe that in the history of Islam we have not had rulers who were known for their drinking habits and who, nonetheless, were effective and just rulers? Of course we have had such rulers... While Musharraf's "drinking habit" - a charge for which the author produced no evidence - is certainly unIslamic, that does not take him out of Islam's fold nor does that negate his right to rule Pakistan. Musharraf, compared to VIRTUALLY ALL of our politicians (including some religious leaders known widely for their drinking habits i.e. the late Kausar Niazi, also known as "Maulana whisky"!) is a decent, humble, and honest individual.
That a ruler is a drinker is by itself not a reason to oppose him let alone fight him under Islamic law.
